The sudden contact with another object causes a great impact especially when the motorcycle speed is very high. The rider, unaware of the coming impact, experiences a sudden jerk of the neck. This causes the ligaments to stretch beyond the normal motion, leading to an injury. Bobby Saadian, a trusted personal injury law firm, shares us some facts about motorcycle neck sprain.

Let us first discover the nature of neck sprain. Neck sprain is the injury in which the soft tissues around the neck are stretched or torn due to a sudden jerk. The soft tissues affected may include muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Neck ligaments are more commonly affected. Ligaments are those strong bands of soft tissues that hold muscles together. In minor cases of neck sprain, ligaments are only stretched or flexed beyond the normal movement, while in more severe cases injury includes tearing of the ligaments.

A neck sprain causes different symptoms which may include pain sensation, mostly at the back and side parts of the neck. The pain intensifies during movement of the neck. Pain may not be immediately felt after the accident. In most cases, pain is felt after 24 to 48 hours after the incident. Muscle spasms may be present which radiates at the shoulders and back. Headache is usually experienced as well. Other symptoms include irritability, difficulty in sleeping, sore throat, stiffness, numbness, tingling sensation, and weakness of the hand and arms.

When you get into a motorcycle accident, going to a hospital to get yourself checked is a must. The tests used to diagnose neck sprain are X-ray and MRI scanning. X-ray shows if your neck bones are damaged from the accident while MRI scanning shows ligament damages, if any.

There are several ways to treat neck sprain. Common methods are through a cervical collar, medication, ice and heat, and therapies.

A cervical collar or a neck brace is used to support the neck. It prevents the muscles from producing pressure in holding the head up. This method of treatment should only last as the physician require it to. Prolonged usage may cause dependence of muscles and may cause them to weaken.

Medications are used to relieve pain, inflammation, and muscle spasms. Most common drugs used are Naproxen, Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen, and Aspirin. Before taking any drug, make sure to consult a physician especially if you have drug allergies.

Cold and warm compress are also methods of neck sprain treatment. For the first 24 to 72 hours, you may apply an ice pack on the neck 4 times a day for 15 to 20 minutes. This method relieves inflammation. Use a clean towel to wrap the ice pack, do not apply ice pack directly to skin. Once inflammation has subsided, you can now apply warm compress also by wrapping the pack in a towel. Warmth helps muscles relax.

Motorcycle accident injuries such as neck sprain does not only cause emotional and health problems. An accident may also lead to a financial problem due to medical expenses and miscellaneous spending. The responsible party or authorities must give you rightful compensation.
