The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did not directly mention the many people seeking denture cream lawsuit settlements in its recent notice to denture adhesive manufacturers. There is little doubt, however, that they were on the agency’s mind when it described the issue of zinc toxicity from denture cream as a “public health issue” in its letter issued on February 23. In that letter, the FDA names myeloneuropathy and blood dyscrasias as symptoms of zinc poisoning. What follows is a discussion of those disorders and their symptoms.

Myeloneuropathy refers to a form of neuropathy, or neurological damage, that affects the myelin sheath. A myelin sheath consists of fatty tissues and proteins. Its function is to protect the nerves and allow for faster conduction of signals. Loss of or damage to myelin sheath can drastically reduce neural function, which is what happens to people with degenerative neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis.
Myeloneuropathy has many possible causes, including some types of diseases, autoimmune response, vitamin deficiency, and exposure to toxins.  An increasingly recognized cause of neurological impairment, one that is affecting some denture cream users, is copper deficiency. When the body absorbs too much zinc (an ingredient in many denture creams) it can be depleted of copper, a mineral critical to maintaining a healthy nervous system.

People suffering from copper deficiency myeloneuropathy may experience a number of symptoms, including body tremors, weakness in the arms in legs, difficulty balancing, and an uneven gait.
The second affliction common to people who overuse denture cream containing zinc, as noted by the FDA in its letter, is blood dyscrasias. This is a very generalized medical term that refers to a blood disorder, such as when there are low counts of a part of the blood (such as white blood cells, red blood cells, or platelets), or the presence of an abnormal blood constituent. It can also describe abnormal blood function.

One instance of blood dyscrasias is low copper levels. This can cause anemia (a red blood cell deficiency), leucopenia, and neutropenia (both are characterized by a low white blood cell count). Symptoms of anemia include weakness, fatigue, lightheadedness, and looking pale, while those suffering from leucopenia and neutropenia may have a tendency to get sick more often or have trouble fighting infection. Too much zinc in the blood could also be described as blood dyscrasias. Zinc poisoning has a number of symptoms, such as a yellowing of the eyes, low blood pressure, stomach pains, nausea, and diarrhea.

Anyone experiencing the symptoms described above should visit their doctor immediately for testing. Blood, urine, and hair tests can all determine whether you have high zinc levels or low copper levels. If these are detected early, your condition may not progress to neurological damage. Another reason to make haste is that blood zinc levels can drop quickly after you stop using a denture cream with zinc. A diagnosis of zinc poisoning is necessary for success in a denture cream lawsuit, so be sure to get tested as soon as possible.

After consulting with your physician and undergoing clinical assessment, your next step should be to contact an experienced denture cream lawyer. The attorneys of the Rottenstein Law Group have more than 25 years of experience holding negligent manufacturers responsible for the injuries they cause innocent consumers. Because the makers of Fixodent and Poligrip did not warn of their products’ health risks, they can be named in a lawsuit and made to pay denture cream lawsuit settlements to those injured by denture adhesive zinc. If you believe you or a family member suffered neurological damage caused by Fixodent or Poligrip, contact RLG today for a free case.
