Is there a law for this?

My friend worked in a theater here in Maryland, and as you may all know there’s a big snowstorm that hits us this past few days, and the road is still not cleared up, and it may take a days to completely cleared it up. It just snowed like 10-15 inches all day yesterday and the day before that, so now the snow here in our neighborhood has gotten bigger and there’s a lot of ice in the street as well. Well, today my friend is supposed to work today, but he called in to say that he can’t make it because he only drives a car and not even an all wheel drive vehicle, and the manager said that it’s ok for him not to come to work UNLESS he can find some people who can work for him as a replacement. He tried calling for some people, but you know they don’t wanna go to work too due to the snow. And then my friend called in again the manager to tell him he can’t find anybody to work for him and he can’t come to work, so now the manager told him, he may get written up if they didn’t find anybody to work for my friend and to me, i think that’s messed up because my friend only get paid a minimum wage here which is .40, and i don’t personally think that it’s worth it to go to work right after the big snowstorm hits. I know people who work in Hospitals and such needed to come to work because anybody can get into accident anytime, but in theater i don’t think it’s necessary to come.

Do you think there’s any law here on Maryland that states that workers are allowed not to come to work if they can’t make it and at the same time not to get written up or get fired just because they couldn’t make it to the workplace.

BTW i tried searching for more info about the law here in our states , but NO LUCK :/

So guys what do you think about my friend’s situation?

there is no "law" that relates to this………..
if your friend misses work, to use your words, "may get written up if they didn’t find anybody to work for my friend" so there is also a chance that your friend won’t get written up.

it is perfectly legal for the employer to expect their employees to be at work and to hold those employees responsible when they don’t work as scheduled. with the weather as bad as it is, if your friend does not have an attendance problem, this won’t be an issue.

if your friend can not get to work safely there is nothing more to do,
there is no reason to sit at home worrying about what might happen……..

49 states are at will which means you can be let go for any reason or no reason, not going to work is as good as any, the weather has no bearing on your employment, there is no law that protects you

No such law – the employer can legally write him up or fire him for not coming to work when scheduled, unless a state of emergency has been declared ordering people to stay off the roads.
