British workers aged 18-29 are becoming more stressed at work, according to research by GfK NOP Engage.

Their report shows that 2.4m under 30s feel they are frequently under pressure at work. It also shows that a third do not believe they have the resources to do their job effectively and 39% believe their employer is blaming the recession for increased workloads put on their staff.

Younger workers are more stressed than their older counterparts

The figures come from a global study of 30,000 workers from 29 countries. It shows that older workers do not feel the same levels of stress. Only 24% of over 60s constantly feel stressed compared with 40% of under-30s.

It could be that the hierarchies within the companies are trying to save money in the recession and so putting more pressure on the junior members of the organisation. In most cases this would be the younger workers.

The survey points towards this with 31% of under-30s believing they are under pressure to work long hours.

The stress is not good for their health

The stress from work will be a detriment to the health and well being of the young workers; indeed 25% believe their job takes a toll on their physical health. Enjoying life is another worry. The survey showed that 39% are concerned they do not have a good work life balance.

Nor is it good for future business

While businesses may feel that allowing the younger workers to bear the brunt of the pressure is the best way to cope with the recession, it could be very damaging in the long term.

Nearly 90% of young British workers do not feel engaged with their employers. This means the UK is only 17th out of 29 countries in the survey. It is important for the UK to lift the morale of the younger workers.

Sukhi Ghataore, Director at GfK NOP Engage, said: “A largely disengaged workforce has an immediate, negative impact on productivity and morale, and it has a longer term impact on recruitment and retention.”

Engaged workers are vital for companies to succeed

However the youngsters who do feel engaged with their employers could become worth their weight in gold.

Ghataore continued “We have a precious core of young British workers who class themselves as ‘highly engaged’ with their employers. Engaged workers want their employer to succeed, want to remain with them, and want to go the extra mile. During tough times, engaged employees and a united workforce are a necessity, not a luxury.”

If you are worried that your employer is discriminating against you because of your age, you may be able to claim compensation. Contact an employment lawyer today.
