Rear-impact collisions are the most common type of auto accident in the United States. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports shows that more than 1.5 million rear-end accidents are reported annually. These types of collisions, where one vehicle hits another vehicle from behind, can be simple bumps that do little damage and produce little to no injuries.

But unfortunately, rear-impact crashes, even at low speeds, can also cause serious injuries and total a vehicle. Some rear-end auto accidents can even tragically end in a traffic fatality. This can be especially true if a large commercial truck is involved. Some federal statistics put the number of deaths each year from rear-end collisions at 2,000 people.

Common Types of Resulting Injuries

As you might expect, the force of a rear-impact collision can cause passengers and drivers to be jolted forward and backward. This can cause one of the most common medical problems after a rear-end crash known as whiplash. In fact, the neck and head are the most exposed parts of the body in a rear-end collision. Having vehicle headrests set to the correct position is the best protection for the head and neck in this type of automobile accident.

Other types of injuries that can often result from rear-end auto accidents are:

Traumatic brain injury
Muscle damage in the neck and back
Soft tissue injuries
Pinched nerves in the back or neck or other nerve-related damage
Herniated discs
Broken bones in the arms and hands
Knee, shoulder or leg injuries
Eye injuries
Burn injuries
Spinal cord injury resulting in temporary or permanent paralysis

Rear-end collisions are on the rise these days, as driver distraction from technology, such as texting and cell phone use, have increased. Being focused on your driving and not allowing such distractions is, of course, the best way to help prevent these types of rear-end auto accidents.
