DePuy Orthopaedics Inc., a subsidiary of the Johnson and Johnson Company announced a recall of their ASR hip systems on August 2010. The recalled hip replacements are the ASR XL acetabular system which was available all over the world and the ASR hip resurfacing system which was only approved outside the United States. There are about 93,000 patients that will be affected by this recall.
The hip recall was due to the high revision rate of the said products that reached about 12.5 percent or 1 out of every 8 patients in just a span of five years. A typical hip replacement system is expected to last at least 15 years.

The recalled hip replacements were both metal on metal. Meaning the two major parts of the system, the ball and the cup, is both made of metal. When the person walks or runs, the metal cup slides with the metal ball that causes some of the metal particles to flake off the device and enter to the spaces around the implant. Some of the metal ion particles nay also get into the bloodstream and travel to other parts of the body.

The tiny metal ion particles can cause damage to the tissue surrounding the joint, which may result to other complications like vasculitis, pseudotumors, and necrosis. The patients who have been implanted by this kind of system can also experience pain in the groin, hip or leg, swelling near the hip joint, difficulty or a change in walking ability.
To prevent the worsening of the symptoms, the doctor may want to have special imaging tests of your hip to see if your hip replacement device is still positioned properly. He may also want to remove the fluid from around the joint or what is called the joint aspiration. The doctor can also ask you to have a blood test to check the levels of the metal ions in the blood.

However, the best solution to this is undergoing another surgery or what is known to be a revision surgery. A revision surgery means that the existing hip replacement device in your body will be taken out and another device will be implanted.
The recalled hip replacement should be properly dealt with so that you can prevent further health and safety complications. So if you are subject to the recall, be sure to visit your doctor right away.
